1. Perform detailed Keyword Research

Before you even begin to create a content calendar, you need to do some very detailed keyword research to discover what your target audience is actually looking for.

Find out what their problems are, and the exact phrases they are typing to look for those answers on Google. UberSuggest or Google Keyword Planner are great tools for finding the right keywords that align with your mission, message and your product.

2. Focus on Long-Tail Keywords

Short keywords are great, however, they are likely very broad, highly competitive, and lacking the customer intent element that will bring you leads from Google, not just traffic.

By changing that keyword into a targeted (long-tail) phrase that your audience is typing for a specific goal, you are more likely to rank higher for terms that your ideal clients are actually using to find what you’re selling.

With a long-tail keyword you are more likely to have less organic competition and find more potential buyers.

For example, if you are a niche baking website such as gluten-free baking, instead of using a broad keyword such as “gluten-free”, use a long-tail keyword such as “how to bake a gluten-free cake”.

Give Your Blog Post Structure

Writing a blog is akin to writing a short story or essay. There’s a defined introduction, middle and end (well at least there should be!).

The start of your blog post needs to introduce your key point, the middle tells the story or gives the key pieces of information, and the end offers a summary of the content and the Next Step available to the reader (aka a Call To Action).

The introduction is used to engage your reader’s interest and let them know quickly if this is the content they’re after. It is also the perfect placement of a reader hook.

The middle goes into more details and takes the reader on the journey to a solution. This piece of the post guides them to your solution.

The end summarises the key points, the key outcomes, and offers a solution or next step.

This structure keeps the reader engaged from the start to the end. An engaged reader is more likely to take up your Call-To-Action.

But one thing to note about the words you are writing….

Do not stuff your keywords

You may be thinking that the more times you use a keyword in your blog post, the better, right?


This is known as “keyword stuffing” and will actually get you penalised by Google and hurt your SEO.

Keyword stuffing looks inauthentic, forced and just unnatural. It also doesn’t read well to the potential clients you’re hoping to woo with your website or conten, so avoid keyword stuffing at all costs.

Know where to place your keywords

Now that you know not to stuff your keywords, you need to know where to optimise them properly so you are not using them too much or too little.

There are a few key parts of the post to add your keywords so that it looks natural and Google will find you easily.

Main Headline

The main headline or title tag is the first place that Google searches for in the results page, so having this optimised is key. Include the keyword as close to the beginning of the title tag as you can because, after 60 characters, it will get cut off in the results page.

Meta Description

The keyword needs to be placed into your meta description as well. This is a great place to include the long-tailed keyword as Google will reward you for exactly matching the viewer’s intention when they type that phrase in the first place.

Make sure you make use of the entire space in the meta, making it as enticing and captivating as possible. This is your chance to engage the reader to click to learn more about the topic.


Google will also look at your URL to match the user’s intent in their search. If the keyword is there and relevant to the body of the article, then you are in the clear!

Keep the URL short and sweet, if it is too long, the keyword will be cut from the SERP (search engine results page).

Headers and Text Body

This is where optimisation can get a bit tricky. Use the keywords too much and you could be penalised, use them too little and no one can find you!

By placing the keywords into one header, the first paragraph, the conclusion, and naturally throughout the article, you are using the keywords in a way that will improve your SEO.

Remember to focus on what the reader wants to learn, it is about improving their lives, not about getting as many rankings as you can which makes you seem inauthentic and overly sales-like.

Optimise Your Blog Post

Optimise Your Images

Now that you have optimised the body and the text of the article, there is another key component to optimise, the image.

Google will not rank you based on the images you select, however, it will rank you based on the ALT text you used for that image. This ALT text notifies Google what the description of the image is about.

Take the time to rename the file of your image to an actual description of the photo. For example, if you are a supplement company and you have a photo of a protein shake, change the file name from “IMG987654” with the keyword such as “healthy protein shake”.

An image used on a blog with the filename, image title and image description all including the focus keyword for that page provide your page with an extra 3 instances of the focus keyword in the code of the page that Google bots “see”.

Note: Google cannot read the words you write inside your image so you don’t have to add keywords into your graphics.

Use Internal Links (aka cross links)

The more content you have on your website, the more internal links that your website should have. This will keep users on your page for much longer and is one of the best blog writing tips to decrease your bounce rates.

A great way to do this is to create a “mind map” of all your articles, then figure out how you can link the relative ones to each other. This is also a great way to promote any products you have such as courses, e-books, photos, etc.

By having a few internal links per article, you are creating more value for the reader and displaying the amount of free information you have to give.

Where possible, cross link to other pages on anchor text that is similar or the same as the focus keyword for the linked page.

Do Not Overuse Topic Tags

Topic tags are an incredibly useful feature for any website, they make it easy to navigate and locate relative information. However, if overused, it can lead to penalisation.

Avoid this issue by taking a closer look at your title tags, if there are any two that look similar, scratch one of them because they should all represent a different category.

For example, if you are a fitness website, if you have the tags “fit”, “fitness”, fit life” etc, this will affect your SEO because it will look like duplicate content.

Include A Call To Action

The call-to-action doesn’t have to be salesy!

Nor do they all have to be the same.

A good rule of thumb is to make the blog post call-to-action the:

  • next step the reader should take,
  • next piece of info they need, or
  • a relevant product or service that helps the reader with the exact topic you’ve discussed in your article.

It could be as simple as an invitation to share or comment, through to a detailed upsell of a product or service. The more relevant the call to action, the more likely it is to convert.

Whatever call-to-action you choose, please make it super clear! 

It needs to be:

  • easily scan-able to scrollers
  • easy to understand
  • one primary action only (make it easy for them to know what to do next)

And on that note, it’s probably time you take a look back through your old blog posts and update them!
